These 12 weeks has been a very big adventure for me because I got to experience new tumbling techniques that I had absolutely no idea about and I got to go through some rough patches along the way. Although I will say that this was by far the most fun project I have ever gotten to do because I got to do it on something that I enjoy doing and I get to share that with my classmates! But towards the end on week 11 I reached a difficult time where I got a concussion and couldn't finish my project with what I was intending to do, but I am still going to keep trying now since I now am better and can do everything like normal again! For everyone that has read my blog I would highly advise you do maybe try this out sometime, and yeah you might think it will seem boring but if you think about it its helping you accomplish the things in your life thats important to you. Like for example, I have been doing cheer ever since I was about 4 years old and it's been a big part in my life since then and I intend to keep doing it until I have to stop. This project help me complete that process and show me different things about this outstanding sport!

So It's the week of our cheer competition and we have exactly 2 days left of practice and something bad happened to make the while thing go downhill! We were stunting in our pyramid and my flyer was doing a back flip into a straight up lib while holding onto the other flyers hands in the air. Then as my flyer came tumbling down on top of my head bring everyone else down with her, made me fall and hit my head and get a concussion in the process. I had about 5 girls laying on top of my head. This made a big change to my whole genius hour project and also to my team, we had to rework the whole routine within those 2 days. and talk about working hard as a team!
Going along with the task I did last week I am going to be working with Cam once again because my form still isn't where it needs to be. In order for this to happen I'm going to have to work on it at least 3 times or 4 times a week. This skill is a hard skill and people may think like oh its just a back flip but no its not that easy you have to be sure you have the correct techniques and it'll get harder and harder overtime.
This week I am going to be working on my tuck once again. Today a cheer practice Coach Cam and I are going to be focusing more on the form that I have in my tuck, because whenever I do go and throw my tuck I don't tuck my legs in far enough with when I don't do that it makes it to where you fall on your face. When doing a tuck you have to be sure that you don't just throw your head back and do a back flip because thats not how it works, you have to pull up and not back because when you do a back handspring you go back and when you're throwing a tuck you have to pull up so you can tuck around. Your head has to be up, your arms have to be up, and as soon as you get to the top of your jump then you need to tuck your legs in and pull through and land on both feet.
So this week I am going to be continuing on my pike jump into a back handspring. I'm working on this skill again because I still haven't mastered it. Whenever I do it I like to hesitate which makes it to where everything doesn't happen at the same time as everyone else doing it too. I am on the JV competition team for Davie and states is only 2 weeks away and I am going to need to have this skill mastered before then. What my plan is for me to get this skill mastered is to go to tumbling maybe 3 times a week, or more. I also need to be sure that I ask for help at practice and have someone watch me to make sure my form is good. This is our biggest competition and It's going to be very important for me to be able to hit my jumping and tumbling sequence. I am working today with Coach Cam so that he can help me have a good form and master this skill.
So this week for my genius hour I'm focusing more on my strength. What I mean by this is I'm going to build up my strength so that whenever I do tumble it looks nice and sharp and clean. Because if you think about it your tumbling is not a good if your all over the place and not tight with your motions.
In order for you to ever get to a certain level of tumbling you need to have the strength to be able to throw that skill and not make it look like a complete mess. You need to master it. In order for you to master it to where you can throw that tumbling anytime and anywhere you need to keep pushing yourself and work more towards your strength so that you won't get hurt because you didn't have the strength to throw the tumbling pass, and also you need to be sure that you know the techniques to that specific skill so you know what your doing and how your supposed to be doing it. So I will be working on my strength in my legs and arms and work on the basic tumbling skills I already have so that I can do everything I can to master the skill. This week am I working on a pike into a back handspring. The reason why I am working on this this week is because I have to do this in my routine for competition cheer and it needs some improvement. Whenever I do it I need to be sure that as soon as I land my jump I have to explode back in order for me to hit it on the right counts and so that it will be in sink with everyone else.
Im practicing this today with my friend haley so that we can be sure to have ours on the same time. Also I'm having Cam spot me, he is a tumbling and stunting coach at IEA and also one of our assistant coaches for davie cheer. In order for us to be able to get this tumbling skill we need to be sure that whenever we do the jump we have to land with our feet together and make sure that as soon as you land the jump then you need to go straight back into the back handspring. This skill seems difficult but it really isn't because its just like doing a standing back handspring but your just adding a jump to it. This week I will be working on my standing tuck once again. I went to KPAC last night (10-17-17) and I was working with Needa on the tumble track, which is basically a trampoline. But anyway she spotted me for the first couple of times and then I had to do the rest alone. Whenever she was spotting me she noticed that I have made a lot of improvement! At home I have been practicing on my trampoline every night and I have also gotten my mom to spot me on the grass at home so that we could maybe see my improvement.
This week I am learning how to do a cartwheel back handspring. This skill may seem easy but if you think about it it's not easy at all because whenever you are doing a cartwheel back handspring you have to be sure that one your cartwheel is straight so that when you land it you can go straight back into the back handspring. Your cartwheel needs to be powerful as well because you need that momentum to go back into a back handspring.
The first thing you need to do is have a perfect cartwheel and then put your "leading" foot down on the ground bend both legs to be able to have that momentum. Also keep your legs and arms in full extension. I still have trouble with getting this skill because I tend to stop between the cartwheel and the back handspring because I'm scared of the outcome. But with time and practice I can get it. Today Laura Kiricoples will be spotting me on this skill and helping me get the special techniques. So this week I have found myself not doing my tumbling how I was intended to do. I say this because this week I have been finding myself not locking my arms out in my back handspring and I end up falling onto my face/stomach. Today (10-4-17) I will be going to cheer practice and my cheer coach Laura Kiricoples will be helping me and spotting me to see what I have done wrong and what I am doing right. One thing that my cheer coach had noticed was that whenever I am doing my back handspring my chest drops. Which makes me tend to fall down on my stomach or make my tumbling passes "shorter". She told me that one way I could fix this problem is maybe by working out my core more and keeping my core tight and make sure I am pushing off the ground as hard as I can so that I can land it. Here's a video of Laura Kiricoples spotting my standing back handspring. |
